Why Bharat Must Go The Green Hydrogen Way and why we must do it now! I strongly believe that Hydrogen has been locked inside the lab for too long and we, the people of Bharat, must make it our mission to free it, and along with it free ourselves from our addiction to Foreign Oil.
By this time, most people are already familiar with Hydrogen and its potential for the future as a clean, reliable and an abundant source of energy. Therefore, it’s pointless to repeat the same old ‘Potential of the Hydrogen’ story.
Nevertheless it’s very important for us all to understand, as to why Hydrogen is always 10 years away in the making. That’s the Ten Trillion Rupee Question. Being part of a startup in the Hydrogen space, I’ve gained many insights and would like to use this opportunity in earnest to share the challenges we, as a Nation, are facing.
As I see it, there are 3 things preventing the Dawn of the Hydrogen Era in Bharat. The first one is the cost of the technology and equipment for us to be able to deploy Hydrogen Ecosystems to address our Industrial and domestic needs. The second one is the geopolitical nature of the subject at hand. Hydrogen, when it takes off, will cause disruption of unimaginable proportions in the Energy space which will change our Nation’s Energy for the better and forever. And that is precisely what we should be aiming for! As a Nation that has been under subjugation of one ruthless power after another, it’s high time for us to become a truly Energy Independent Nation, in order to unleash the True potential of our Nation’s Peoples. The third challenge is the lack of genuine commitment on the part of those who are in the periphery of the Hydrogen Space.
As a result, those trying to work on making Hydrogen viable are becoming distracted with side projects that require them to pivot away from Hydrogen entirely. Consequently, the domestic players in the Hydrogen space are outshined by their ‘sophisticated’ foreign counterparts who will inevitably end up making it too expensive to be viable for our cost sensitive market. This is where the need for Patient Capital arises, which there is not a lot. As the Hydrogen Industry tries to exit from its nascent stage and enter into a mature stage, it will need strong policy support and a truly committed leadership from Bharatiya Industry veterans to ensure that the domestic players in the space can strengthen their hold.
The current energy equation of our Nation is not only expensive but it is also unsustainable. We spend a substantial portion of our revenues on energy imports. It’s akin to paying a very large portion of household income on electricity and fuel bills, which will surely bankrupt us. Even though we are blessed with more than 300 Sunny days we are yet to tap Solar Energy’s true potential. A proper combination of Solar, Wind and Hydrogen can be the Silver Bullet solution to our Nation's Energy Situation.
Immediate action on the part of those incharge is warranted, lest it becomes a yet another lost opportunity. It wouldn’t be the first time and neither would it be the last. Hopefully Yours! PAREE
